VIDEO: Trucker Shot To Death After Stabbing Police Officer During Stop
Sugarcreek, Ohio – Shocking body cam video of a trucker stabbing an Ohio police officer before being fatally shot was released on Friday.
The deadly incident was first reported on Wednesday.
Captain Brian Dalton, 37, of the Sugarcreek Police Department (SPD) responded to a call around 10 a.m. Wednesday of a tractor-trailer operating through a no-truck zone and causing property damage.
Dalton located the big rig and its driver at TMK Farm Service, a nearby local business.
The driver of the truck has been identified as 32-year old Elijah Collins III of High Point, North Carolina.
Paperwork in Capt. Dalton’s hand during the video indicate Collins drove for Fox Freight based out of Elk Grove Village, Illinois.
The video, released by the SPD on Friday evening, begins with Capt. Dalton exiting his patrol car and walking towards a Volvo semi-truck.
Collins can be seen filming the encounter with Capt. Dalton on his cell phone.
Capt. Dalton hands Collins a citation for driving in a “no-thru truck zone” and informed him he was receiving a summons for “criminal mischief.”
When asked for the last four digits of his social security number, Collins replied he didn’t know.
He also refused to provide a contact phone number.
“You’ll have to make a mandatory court appearance … July 3rd at 1 p.m.” Capt. Dalton informed Collins.
“I’m not doing that,” Collins replies, as he grabs a screwdriver from the door of his big rig.
The video shows Collins lunging towards the captain before Dalton yelled in pain after being stabbed in the neck.
A very brief struggle between the two men ensued before eleven shots are heard.

Collins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Capt. Dalton was airlifted to Akron General Hospital, where he was in ICU in stable condition during his stay.
He was cleared to go home on Friday, according to Sugarcreek Police Chief Kevin Kaser.
“He seems to be doing very well, responding very well. We expect a full recovery at this point,” Kaser told The Times Reporter.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (OBCI) is further investigating the incident.
Kaser said he is waiting until the OBCI completes their research before releasing additional information.
That investigation is estimated to take about five months.
Capt. Dalton has been with SPD since 2011 and was promoted to captain in July 2018.
Collins’s autopsy will be conducted by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
