VIDEO: Trooper Struck by Big Rig in 8-Vehicle Chain Reaction Crash
Lubbock County, TX (video below) – A local news crew and multiple troopers received the scare of their lives on Friday morning while working an accident along US 84 in Lubbock County, TX.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers and other first responders were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving a big rig in the westbound lanes of Highway 84, one mile east of Slaton, around 10:45 a.m. on Friday.
Dense fog significantly limited visibility for motorists leading to the initial crash, according to DPS officials.
As first responders worked to clear the scene, a big rig traveling eastbound jackknifed and came to rest in the center median.
Investigators say multiple other passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of the jackknifed trailer.
Shortly thereafter, another tractor-trailer traveling eastbound was approaching the scene when police say a red SUV changed lanes in front of it causing the driver of the semi to lose control.
The tractor-trailer then smashed into two passenger vehicles from the rear before it rolled onto its side.
When it did, the trailer then crushed a DPS work truck and sent first responders running for cover into the ditch.
The tractor also collided with a camping trailer being pulled by an SUV before coming to rest on its passenger side.
In all, a total of five crashes occurred involving four semi tractor-trailers and four passenger vehicles, investigators say.
One DPS trooper was struck and suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries, according to DPS officials.
Another motorist had to be extricated from his vehicle.
He also suffered serious injuries.
Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries.
None of the truckers involved in the crashes reported any serious injuries.
Local news outlet KPRC 2 captured incredible video from the scene.
