Unhappy Trucker Leads Police on 15-Mile Chase Before Tasered and Arrested

Polk County, Iowa – A California truck driver is in police custody after he led troopers on a 15-mile chase along Interstate 80 Thursday morning.

Iowa State Patrol (ISP) says a trooper pulled 46-year-old Ryan Tourtillott of Apple Valley, California over along westbound I-80 near the 143-mile marker at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Officials say as the trooper asked Tourtillott to exit the big rig and Tourtillott complied.

However, as the two men were standing at the rear of the trooper’s vehicle, Tourtillott became angry when he realized he was receiving a traffic citation.

According to Sgt. Nathan Ludwig with ISP, Tourtillott crumpled up the ticket and threw it on the ground.

He then ran back to his semi, jumped in, and drove away, Ludwig says.

Tourtillott continued westbound on I-80 traveling at speeds between 50 and 60 miles per hour, ISP reports.

At one point Tourtillott stopped the big rig, but then refused to get out, officials said.

Troopers then began pursuing Tourtillott moments later when he once again drove away.

ISP says the pursuit lasted for 15 miles along I-80 westbound until Tourtillott finally came to a stop again.

Ludwig says Tourtillott chose to stop instead of running over stop sticks officers had deployed on I-80/35 under the 86th St. bridge in Urbandale.

According to Ludwig, six officers were on the scene and began giving Tourtillott commands to exit the semi-truck.

However, he once again refused the orders, so Ludwig says officers used a baton to break out the driver’s side window of the cab.

Officers then tasered the truck driver and arrested him.

He is currently being held in the Polk County Jail on $2,847.50 bond.
