3 Dead Including Trucker In 6-Vehicle Crossover Accident
Fulton County, Ohio – A truck driver and two motorists passed away in a head-on collision on Memorial Day along the Ohio Turnpike in Fulton County.
Authorities identified the deceased truck driver as 29-year-old Kenneth Trowbridge of South Bend, Indiana.
The deceased motorists were identified as Refugio Elisandro Nunez-Pena, 39, and Simone D. Nunez, 42, both of Plymouth, Indiana.
According to investigators the crash occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. in the westbound lanes between the Archbold and Wauseon exits and included a total of six vehicles including 2 big rigs.
Mr. Trowbridge was driving a tractor-trailer east on the Ohio Turnpike when he drove off the left side of the road, into the median and the westbound lanes of traffic.
The big rig then collided head-on with a passenger vehicle killing both the driver, Nunez-Pena, and passenger, Nunez.
Debris from the collision then struck another passenger car in the windshield area.
The driver, Isabella Nunez 18, also from Plymouth, Indiana, was not hurt.
Two other occupants, Trevor Fisher, 19, and a 9-year-old child were taken to Toledo Medical Hospital after suffering minor injuries.
The trailer from Trowbridge’s tractor-trailer became detached and then overturned as it continued eastbound in the westbound lanes.
Another trailer-tractor, operated by Allen Schlabach 61, of Killbuck, Indiana, tried to avoid it and swerved off the left side of the roadway.
He was uninjured.
The incident closed the westbound lanes for hours, troopers said.
Investigators have not yet indicated what they believe led to Mr. Trowbridge losing control of his rig.
Their investigation is ongoing.
