Truck Driver Dozes Off Before Dozing Into Fire Truck
Liberty Township, Ohio – A truck driver fell asleep moments before crashing into a fire truck along I-75 early Tuesday morning, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
Investigators said a crash involving two semi-trucks occurred along I-75 northbound around midnight on Tuesday.
The collision resulted in both semis becoming disabled and one blocking traffic in the right lane of I-75.
As firefighters and emergency responders were on the scene assisting, a tractor-trailer plowed into a Liberty Township Fire Department truck.
One firefighter was inside the truck at the time it was struck.
He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to officials.
Liberty Township Fire Chief Ethan Klussman said it was a scary situation.
“It’s horrific. You can’t do justice with just looking at the pictures,” he told local news outlet local12.com.
Chief Klussman said firefighters were shaken up and “thought they lost a brother” when they saw the big rig barrel into the fire truck.
The drowsy semi-truck driver suffered minor injuries, according to OSHP.
It is unclear how fast he was driving at the time, but officials say he is facing numerous charges.
OSHP says it is continuing to investigate.
