Tire Blowout Sends Tractor-Trailer Plunging Off Of Overpass
UPDATE: Friday, May 3 @ 7:00 a.m. – Authorities have now identified the truck driver involved in this single-vehicle crash.
Jack Ross Fee, 52, of La Fayette, GA, was behind-the-wheel when his tractor-trailer blew a tire sending him and his rig plummeting off an overpass along I-81 and onto Highway 11E below on Thursday afternoon.
Officials said no charges will be filed in the incident.
Mr. Fee was airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
No update on his condition has been made available at this time.
Greene County, Tennessee – A tire blowout led to a tractor-trailer plunging off of an overpass along Interstate 81 on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) a southbound big rig had a tire blowout causing the driver to lose control.
Moments later, the tractor-trailer plunged off of an overpass along the interstate and into the northbound lanes of Highway 11E below, investigators said.
According to Sgt. Noah Click with THP, the driver, whose identity has not been released, was airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center.
His condition is not known at this time.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation has urged motorist to avoid the area on Thursday afternoon as crews work to clear the wreckage.
US 11E/SR 34 is closed in both directions at I-81 (Exit 23). A semi has went off the I-81 SB bridge down onto US 11E underneath. I-81 SB lanes are open at this time.
