Semi Strikes And Kills Pedestrian, Truck Driver Likely Won’t Face Charges
Kansas City, Missouri – A truck driver will likely not face charges after the semi he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian attempting to cross a busy interstate on Saturday.
The fatal incident happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. when a 34-year-old man attempted to cross I-70 near Main Street.
A tractor-trailer traveling eastbound was unable to come to a stop before striking and killing the man.
It is unclear why the victim chose not to use the pedestrian walkway bridge directly above the interstate.
The truck driver immediately stopped the truck and authorities say he is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Sgt. Deb Randol with the Kansas City Police Department told Fox4 KC that the pedestrian was doing “exactly what you are not supposed to do.”
She said the victim was wearing a dark shirt and kaki shorts and blended into the background.
Randol said the truck driver “slammed on his brakes but it was too late.”
She said this type of accident is common in this area. “I’ve worked this area for 10 years and I’ve seen this a lot.”
In fact, twenty-one fatality cases similar to this one occurred last year in Kansas City, according to police.
The identities of the deceased and truck driver have not been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
