Runaway Big Rig Tire Tragically Kills Motorist

UPDATE: TRUCKER NOW CHARGED…READ MORE

Peach County, GA – A woman was tragically killed Sunday afternoon along I-75 after her vehicle was struck by a tire that came loose from a tractor-trailer.

According to the Peach County Coroner, Kerry Rooks, the fatal accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. near Byron, GA.

Investigators say two tires flew off of a big rig traveling in the southbound lanes and crossed the median.

One of the tires then collided into the windshield of a northbound passenger vehicle driven by 36-year-old Jennifer Thomas of Gray, GA.

Officials say the tire crushed the glass and then continued on into the vehicle fatally striking Thomas.

Investigators say her child and parents were also traveling with her inside the car at the time.

They each suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to Rooks.

Rooks says the Georgia State Highway Patrol is still investigating what caused the tires to come loose.

However, the truck driver, who has not yet been identified, did stop and is cooperating with the investigation, according to Rooks.

Transportation Nation Network will continue to monitor the ongoing investigation.

  1. That happened to me also. I pretriped the rig in upstate NY. And when I woke up in NH I noticed it missing. I asked the mechanic what happened he said the whole a letter broke wasn’t my fault. Thankfully I did most of my driving at night when everyone else was overpopulating the truck stops.
