Pickup Truck Kills FedEx Trucker Along I-4, Another FedEx Trucker Robbed on I-57
DeLand, FL; Chicago, IL – One FedEx trucker was killed on Wednesday along Interstate 4 and another FedEx truck driver was robbed while sitting in his truck on Interstate 57.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a fatal crash was reported around 4:15 a.m. on I-4 near State Road 44.
Investigators say a 52-year-old FedEx truck driver pulled his semi-truck with dual trailers into the right emergency lane of westbound I-4 and was standing on the driver’s side steps when a 2007 Dodge pickup truck drifted toward the emergency lane.
Police say the pickup truck, driven by Travis Hutto, 21, of Deltona, struck both the FedEx driver and the left side of the truck.
The FedEx driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
FHP said charges are pending against Hutto, who was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured.
Alcohol did not play a role in the crash, investigators say.
FedEx Trucker Robbed
In a separate incident involving a FedEx truck driver on Wednesday, Illinois State Police (ISP) say a trucker was robbed while sitting in his truck along I-57 in Calumet Park, IL.
According to ISP, the driver of a FedEx tractor-trailer was driving southbound on I-57 at 127th Street around midnight when the vehicle had a mechanical issue.
The trucker pulled the big rig to the side of the road and checked under the hood.
After returning to his truck, he was sitting in the cab when police say multiple suspects broke into the trailer using box cutters to cut the lock off the rear of the trailer.
The alleged thieves stole numerous packages, ISP says.
The truck driver told police he was unaware of the break in at the time it was occurring and the suspects did not confront him.
ISP says no one is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
