Motorist Confesses to Opening Fire at Trucker on Interstate, Police Say

Memphis, TN – A trucker traveling through Memphis late Friday night said a person in a SUV opened fire at him while on Interstate 240.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), a trucker, who was not identified, was driving northbound on I-240 near South Parkway in Memphis shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Police said the driver of the semi-truck reported “someone in a white Chevy Tahoe with a brown hood” began shooting at him.

The trucker called 9-1-1 and reported the incident.

Authorities said they located the Tahoe at Elvis Presley Boulevard and Alcy.

Police found four occupants inside the vehicle and a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun in a pink backpack.

The driver of the Tahoe, a female, said “someone” had cut her off on I-240.

It is not clear if she was referring to the semi-truck.

Each person inside the Tahoe said Zamario Jones, 19, was the one who shot at the truck.

According to MPD, Jones leaned out the rear window of the Tahoe and fired one shot at the truck.

Police shut down I-240 to search for the shell casing.

MPD said they found one that matched the handgun.

Jones admitted to firing at the truck, and was charged with aggravated assault, MPD said.

Further, MPD said Jones had additional warrants for aggravated burglary, theft and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Jones is being held on a total bond of $76,000.

According to jail records, Jones is a citizen of Yemen, but was born in the United States.
