INVESTIGATION: Trucker Was Watching Porn Before Crash That Killed Young Woman

Lee County, AL – An Alabama truck driver is facing jail time in connection to a crash along I-85 that claimed the life of an Auburn University student in 2018.

On Tuesday, 45-year-old Robert Lockwood was arrested in Houston County, AL after a Lee County grand jury returned an indictment on one count of manslaughter.

Authorities say the crash occurred on July 25, 2018 as Lockwood was operating a semi-tanker filled with jet fuel along northbound I-85.

Investigators say traffic was stopped when Lockwood, who was distracted by a mobile device, struck the rear of a 2013 Kia Soul driven by 20-year-old Cassidy Meadows.

Authorities say Meadows was killed instantly.

The chain reaction crash reportedly shut down the northbound lanes for hours as crews worked to clear the fatal scene.

A further investigation conducted by the Auburn Police Division, Alabama State Troopers, and Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences revealed Lockwood did not apply his brakes until after slamming into the passenger vehicle.

Following his arrest on Tuesday, Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes said their investigation uncovered that Lockwood was viewing pornographic material on his phone at the time of the crash.

Additionally, Hughes said authorities are continuing their investigation.

Lockwood is being held in the Lee County Jail Detention Facility on a $30,000 bond.

Transportation Nation Network will continue to follow this ongoing case.
