DUI During Suicide? Trucker Charged With Vehicular Homicide After Striking Pedestrian
Chambersburg, Pennsylvania – A Pennsylvania truck driver was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI after police say the tractor-trailer he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian early Friday morning along Interstate 81.
State police said Miami Jade, 27, of Brooklyn, PA, was determined to be legally drunk and under the influence of alcohol when the big rig he was operating struck a woman on I-81 South, near the on-ramp from Route 30, at approximately 1 a.m.
According to investigators, the woman, whose identity has not been released, entered the highway from the west side of I-81 near mile marker 15.5 in Guilford Township and then walked into the passenger side of the 18-wheeler. Authorities say they have not determined why the woman was there or if her motivation was to harm herself.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The southbound lanes were closed for several hours as investigators tried to piece together what happened.
In addition to facing a charge of homicide by vehicle while DUI, Jade also faces aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, DUI general impairment, DUI commercial vehicle, careless driving and restriction on alcoholic beverages charges.
He was arraigned Friday morning, and bail was set at $250,000, which he was unable to post. He remains in Franklin County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 5.
