Big Rig Strikes And Kills Good Samaritan Assisting Crashed Trucker

Mississippi County, Arkansas – A 25-year-old man was struck and killed by a big rig along Interstate 55 Tuesday morning after he stopped to give aid to a truck driver who had overturned his tractor-trailer and crashed.

According to the Arkansas State Police (ASP), the fatal scene unfolded just after 5:30 a.m. at the 28.6 mile marker along northbound I-55.

Truck driver John Chambers, 37, of Dallas, Texas was trapped inside of his 2006 International which was lying on its passenger side and blocking the right lane.

Austin Lumpkins of Tishomingo, Mississippi parked on the shoulder and exited his vehicle to assist the Chambers.

 

As he did, officials said Lumpkins was struck and killed by a 2017 Volvo semi traveling northbound.

Authorities said road conditions were dry and visibility was clear at the time of the accident.

It is unknown what led to the initial crash as well as if authorities have located and questioned the truck driver who struck and killed Lumpkins.
