Big Rig Rear Ends Fire Engine, Collides With Highway Patrol Car On The Scene Of An Accident
Dix Hills, New York – A truck driver was cited Tuesday morning after the tractor-trailer he was operating failed to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and struck both a fire truck and a Highway Patrol car near exit 51 on the Long Island Expressway.
According to officials, Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol and Dix Hills firefighters responded to the scene of a crash at approximately 12:25 a.m. when the big rig struck the rear of the fire engine which was occupied at the time by several firefighters. The rig then jackknifed and struck a police patrol car, according to the accident report.
One firefighter, one police officer and the truck driver were all transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation was dispatched to the scene to clean up a fuel spill.
The truck driver was issued a summons for failure to move over for stopped emergency vehicles. This incident comes on the heels of a truck driver being struck and killed by the side mirror of a passing semi after he exited his truck along State Road 528 in Orange County, Florida, last week. Fortunately, no one in the accident this morning was killed or even seriously injured.
