19-Year-Old Driver And Her Parents Killed After Pulling In Front Of Semi At Stop Sign
Franklin Township, New Jersey – A 19-year-old driver and her parents were killed on Sunday after police say she pulled in front of a semi-tanker in an intersection in Franklin Township.
According to investigators, Bridgeton resident Mariela Cardoso-Baez was behind-the-wheel of a Mazda M3 and driving south on Lake Road at 3:20 p.m. when she failed to slow at a stop sign at the intersection of West Boulevard and Lake Road.
Authorities say she pulled in front of a semi-tanker hauling propane.
The collision sent both vehicles skidding off of the roadway and resulted in the car becoming pinned underneath the semi, police said.
Cardoso-Baez along with her parents Jose Cardoso, 44, and Adriana Baez Mellado, 45, who were occupants in the vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Cardoso-Baez’s 11-year-old brother, whose name has not been released, was also in the car.
He survived the crash and was flown to Cooper University Hospital for emergency surgery, according to Franklin Police spokesman Lt. Matthew DeCesari.
DeCesari called the scene “gruesome” and said the rescue efforts were complicated because the victims were heavily entrapped.
The truck driver, a 48-year-old Clementon resident, was taken to Inspira Hospital in Woodbury with head and neck pain, DeCesari said.
Police also confirmed the truck driver had the right of way and is not expected to be charged in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
