120 People Apprehended In Big Rig Human Smuggling Bust
Laredo, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents made quite a discovery last Friday in the trailer of a big rig.
On May 10, 2019 at 12:15 a.m., Laredo West Border Patrol agents assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol Immigration Checkpoint located on U.S. Hwy 83 northwest of Laredo, Texas, encountered a semi-trailer full of people trying to enter the United States illegally.
Agents who were working checkpoint operations encountered a black semi-truck with a white trailer, according to CBP.
While interviewing the driver, who claimed to have no identification, a canine alerted to the odors of concealed humans and/or narcotics within the trailer.
Officials then referred the tractor-trailer to the secondary inspection area.
The driver panicked and fled on foot exiting through the passenger door and running into an adjacent field, according to authorities.
Agents proceeded to open the trailer and discovered a total of 120 people.
Although all individuals appeared to be in good health, officials said, they were evaluated by Border Patrol Emergency Medical Technicians.
Fortunately for all individuals found inside the trailer, the weather was unseasonably cool and conditions inside the trailer were bearable.
Nonetheless, officials indicated the trailer was locked and could not have been opened from the inside.
The individuals apprehended in the trailer consisted of 11 juveniles from Honduras and Guatemala, along with 109 adults, both male and females, from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and Mexico.
This is the second such discovery of a human smuggling attempt by big rig in the last couple of weeks.
On Monday, April 29, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents made the discovery of 66 people inside the trailer of a big rig at the immigration checkpoint on Interstate Highway 35 north of Laredo.
The truck driver was a U.S. citizen and was taken into custody on the scene, along with each of those being smuggled.
